Practical Training for International Students
Information on clinical clerkships/ internships for visiting medical students
Depending on the medical department, it is possible for visiting medical students to do practical training at our hospital. Knowledge of the German language will be an advantage. Not all departments will accept students who are not able to speak German. Very good English knowledge, though, is necessary if you do not speak German. Please be aware that most clinics only offer practical training for students with good German language skills to ensure appropriate patients contact. This kind of practical training is called Famulatur (clinical clerkship) or Praktikum (Internship for final year students).
Unfortunately, we cannot offer any payment or financial aid. You will be responsible to organize accommodation on your own.
Application at the International Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt):
If you want to apply for practical training in a clinical clerkship/ internship at our hospital, please inform yourself about our departments.
Information on our clinical departments is available on this website:
The research focus of our faculty is described here:
You register and do your whole application here online. During the online registration you will be required to upload several documents. Some of the forms are available on that site, others you have to upload yourself. Since some documents have to be provided by your school or doctors please start your application with sufficient time ahead. Your complete application should be handed in at least 8 weeks prior to your planned clinical clerkship/ internship start.
- Proof of Immunisation (Form online and only use that one )- Please make sure it contains the Hep-Titer and immunization dates, since otherwise it will be automatically rejected.
- Confirmation of registration from your university in English or German (Form online and only use that one )
- Letter of motivation with the preferred study plan
- Letter of recommendation from one of your professors
- Proof of German / English proficiency
- Academic transcript of records
- Copy of your passport
- Proof of valid health insurance for Germany in English or German (needed upon arrival)/ Copy of EHIC-Card
The earlier we get your complete application the earlier we can proceed it. Please be aware that we distribute remaining placements on the qualification of the applicant and on a first come, first served basis, so early application is recommended.
Onceyou have handed in all necessary documents we will forward them to the clinic you applied for. (Please be aware that an incomplete proof of immunisation will automatically lead to rejection of your application). Once the clinic confirms the placement opportunity we will send you a „Letter of acceptance“. Only then your stay at our Faculty/ University Clinic is officially confirmed.
It is advisable to apply for a visa - if necessary - and to organize accommodation as early as possible.
We recommend the students dorm for accommodation. During the semester break (July-September and March-April) chances to obtain a place are good .
